The government manages almost all aspects of one's life. Officials of these agencies are responsible for imposing rules and sanctions. The Texas railroad commissioner is one of the longest and oldest government post. Its duties as an official has had many changes in the past decades.

The first attempt to creating the commission was made in 1876 but it was only during 1891 when it was fully established. It was made by the state governor of the era. The group was made to take care of railway operations and the position is held by a governor appointee.

Currently, the post is held by a person who won during a special election for the post. Since the rise of other government offices, the jurisdiction of this body has been minimized. These days, it only takes care of issues pertaining to natural gas utilization and mining and pipeline operations.

One of the commission's concerns and responsibilities involve pipeline safety. Members of the commission are responsible for the production of safety manuals, issuance of guidelines and laws and also information regarding the prevention of pipeline damage.

One of their functions as an office is to issue licenses and permits to various establishments that produce or utilize natural gas and other energies. There are various permits given and they range from drilling to storage permits.

The commission is also responsible in the propagation of awareness among the general public on the proper uses, maintenance and effects of natural gas and alternative energy. It renders education and sheds light on issues by conducting workshops, meetings and seminars.

If one aspires to become a Texas railroad commissioner, they need to wait every two years for the election to occur before they can run for the position.
