The Various Unions Australia Have And How They Assist Workers

By Jennie Sandoval

The unions Australia have are as diverse as in any other part of the world. Historically they have played an important part in the the different cultures they are in. Initially they were only formed by the working class as a means to ensure demands for higher wages were met with success, but over time their role has widened to many more areas than just wages.

These employee funded organizations exist to help workers with their basic rights and relationships with their employers. Some of the basic rights they help protect are issues involving health and safety, discrimination, minimum wage enforcement and sexual harassment. Union representatives assist workers when they make claims against their employers.

They also assist with some long term services as well. They will often help with free and discounted legal services for their primary members if they have legal problems. They may also provide members discounted group health or life insurance policies at reduced costs. Many will also have training programs or internships for any young people first entering into the workforce.

One of the advantages of trade unions is their ability to do collective bargaining. When they are negotiating a work contract, they bring together the workers for solidarity and form a much great impact for them at the bargaining table. Many companies will respect this process even more because it is far easier than bargaining with every employee on their own.

This greater impact often results in saved jobs, greater wages and benefit packages, and better compensation for any hours worked outside of normal working hours. They also help to limit outsourcing to other countries, and help ensure quality trained workers with set standards for employment positions. This helps ensure quality products are produced by the employees.

There are many different trade unions for various employees for many different occupations. These may range from professional construction workers or medical employees to simple factory workers. Joining up is as effortless as talking with your union rep or stuart, filling out any necessary paperwork and paying any dues that are appropriate. As long as you keep paying the dues and stay employed in the field, you will be entitled to be a part of the union.

It is important to understand that they are good for employers as well. Employers can use fewer people for negotiating and communicating to their employees. They also reap greater rewards from the increased productivity and loyalty from their employees. They also help companies save money through a reduction in accidents and down time because of a safer workforce. They also get more responsible and better trained people through union training programs.

The unions Australia has are as varied as the many different people that are in them. They help provide safeguards for their members and greatly enrich the diversity and well being of the every day common worker. Now when you look at a loaf of bread or your automobile or any other commonplace items, hopefully you will realize that there is an organization behind the people making them to help make everyone's life a little better.
