Religious Views Political Responsibility And Personal Choices

By Jennie Sandoval

The theory of political responsibility is a new one considering how long mankind has been around. In the past it was always whoever was strongest, had the largest armies or was the current god's chosen that held the greatest power over the people. The average person had very little to say or do with the direction their clan, city or country moved in. 1

Things have changed a lot since the time of queens and kings and their vessels. This was a religious and political doctrine held by many monarchs that held kingship as a steward to his people. This divine right could only be received directly from the will of God. There-fore it was believed that only only the divine may judge an unjust or unfit king so kings could never do wrong.

Part of this was derived from the ancient belief that only God could bestow earthly powers to rule by. It was also thought that any spiritual leadership was passed to religious leaders to aid leading masses on the path to faith. These primary leaders had a divine responsibility to the masses to always watch out for them and only do what would be in their best interest. Tragically most power, great or otherwise easily corrupts.

Leading up to and after the glorious revolution in 1688 this theory was abandoned. It was further weakened world wide with the onset of the American revolution and the French revolution in the late part of the eighteenth century. Mankind began to realize that they could choose the people that would rule over them, and if they did poorly, they could be replaced.

With the failure of several monarchies, the holy churches that they derived power and authority from diminished in influence and power with them. As more powerful splinter regions gained popularity people slowly realized that nature of the relationship with god was more personal than external. Because of this personal relationship idea, they felt they should not be told how to show their faith by other people.

From this historical revelation came the thought that every person is sovereign over themselves and with this follows the great responsibility to decide who would rule over them. In many cases there are a group of different people chosen directly or indirectly for this purpose. This groups of chose people has several different names. They are called bureaus, congress, parliament and councils to name a few.

History has shown us that bad people still crave power. Often they try to seat themselves in these places of power voted on by their fellow man whether it is through deception or other nefarious means. It falls to each person to dispose of these bad people to protect themselves and their fellow man.

It is believed that only in the last five hundred years has humanity awoken to the theory of political responsibility. This new idea that every individual is a sovereign capable of making any choices for their own welfare. As sovereigns, individuals should try to remember they are ultimately responsible for all people they choose to put in charge.
