The first people to live in Malaya were Stone Age hunter-gatherers. They arrived as early as 8,000 BC. Later Stone Age farmers came to Malaya and displaced them. (The hunter-gatherers continued to exist but they retreated into remote areas). The farmers practiced slash and burn agriculture. They cleared an area of the rainforest by burning it then grew crops. After a few years, the land would be exhausted and the farmers would clear a new area. However within a few years, the old area would become covered in vegetation and would become fertile again.
Those living in the coastal regions had early contact with the Chinese and Indians; seafaring traders from India brought with them Hinduism, which was blended with the local animist beliefs. As Muslims conquered India, they spread the religion of Islam to Malaysia. In the 15th century, Islam acquired a firm hold on the region when the Hindu ruler of the powerful city-state of Malacca, Parameswara Dewa Shah, converted to Islam.
The flag design consists of a blue rectangle on the top left corner having a yellow crescent and a yellow star with fourteen points and a field of red and white stripes. The stripes have identical widths. The fourteen-pointed star signifies the unity of the 13 federal states and the federal government. The equal width in the red and white stripes symbolizes the equal status of the 13 federal states and the federal government. The golden crescent moon represents Islam because it is the national religion. The blue region means the harmony and unity of the Malaysian people. Yellow is considered the royal color associated with the Malay rulers.
In September 1963 the country united with Singapore and the north Borneo territories of Sabah (formerly North Borneo) and Sarawak to form the Federation of Malaysia. The original flag had 11 stripes and an 11 point star but three more were added to mark the inclusion of the new states. Even though Singapore departed the Federation in 1965, the flag is still used.The flag of Malaysia consists of 14 alternating horizontal stripes of red and white that run down the flag, starting with red at the top. In the top left quarter of the Malaysian flag, there is a blue square. Inside the square sits a yellow crescent and 14-pointed star.
On April 1, 1946, the Malayan Union was founded, followed on February 1, 1948, by the Federation of Malaya. A competition for a national flag led to the design first hoisted on May 26, 1950. It consisted of 11 horizontal stripes of red and white, the colors favored by the dominant United Malays National Organization and found in the flags of neighboring Indonesia and Thailand. The canton of the flag was blue with a yellow star of 11 points, symbolizing Malaya’s 11 states, and a yellow crescent. When additional states joined on September 16, 1963, the flag was modified.
The flag was further modified to respect the new federal states included in the federation in the form of three additional stripes and three additional points in the star.
