History Of Laos Flag

By Tom Frank

Laos is a country located in Southeast Asia and is officially named as Lao People's Democratic Republic. The history of the Laos flag can be traced back to 1953 when the royal government and the Pathet Lao struggled for political power and the Pathet Lao succeeded by being an alliance of the royal government before taking over the rule.

During this time, the Pathet Lao used the flag design of blue with red stripes at the top and at the bottom and a white disk in the center. This became the national flag of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party wherein the red stripes signified blood shed by the people for their drive to achieve freedom and the color blue representing prosperity and wealth for the people.

In the 17th century, under the region of King Souliyavongsa, the Kingdom entered its 'golden age' and gained increasing attention from Europe. Reports written by Dutch merchants from the East Indian Company describe a land of magnificent palaces, temples, and awe-inspiring religious ceremonies. Vientiane was then considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Southeast Asia.

The current Lao flag became official at the same time the republic was created (1975). The white circle is said to represent the sunrise over the Mekong River. It is also sometimes described as the unity after the struggle from imperialism. This flag is also one of the few that represents a communist country without having the typical communist symbolic stars or hammer and sickle.

The flag of Laos consists of three horizontal stripes with a white circle in the middle. The top and bottom stripes are equal width and are red; while the middle stripe is blue and equal to the width of the two red stripes.

The umbrella is a Buddhist tradition and the pedestal means the laws on which the nation is founded. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Laos Flag for the future.
