Mexico Flag History Today

By Antonio Guslas

A country rich in history, tradition and culture, Mexico is made up of 31 states and one federal district. It is the third largest country in Latin America and has one of the largest populations more than 100 million making it the home of more Spanish speakers than any other nation in the world.

The first national flag of Mexico came into existence in 1821 when the country secured its independence from the rule of Spain. Just two years later when the federal republic was established, changes were made to the coat of arms and incorporated as part of the second national flag. The first flag featured a crown on the head of the eagle, which was now removed. Further, the eagle was now shown holding a serpent in its talons, and oak and laurels branches were added. These have been preserved in the modern-day flag.

The Mexican flag symbols have a fascinating story behind them. The eagle on the Mexican flag alludes to an important in Mexican history and culture that goes back to the Aztecs. Legend has it that the Aztec's were told by one of their Gods, Huitzilopochtli that they should look on a lake for an Eagle sitting upon a cactus and holding a snake in its talon. The vision went on to say that when they saw this, they were to settle and build their Empire around this point. During their migration, the Aztec people spotted this eagle and founded the city of Tenochtitlan, what is now present-day Mexico City. Thus, the central emblem is a reminder for the Mexican people of their Aztec roots.

The national flag was created in 1821 and adopted by the “Army of Three Guarantees,” which took its name from the guarantees of religion, independence, and union promised by the Plan of Iguala. The three colors of the Mexican flag were adopted at that time: green for independence, white for religion, and red for union. During the short-lived first Mexican empire, the stripes changed position. The eagle was placed alone on the white band, facing forwards with its wings spread. Its head was shown in profile bearing a crown.

There is no official directive for the meaning of the colors used in the Mexican flag. However, the first use of these colors was by the Army of the Three Guarantees in 1821. The Army was formed by the unification of Spanish troops and Mexican insurgent troops.

As for the central seal, the flag which was used during the Second Mexican Empire contained 5 eagles, with one in each corner of the flag surrounding the central seal which also had a royal crest symbolizing Maximilian's title of Emperor. The current version of the Mexican flag was adopted in 1968 and contains the national crest on both the sides of the flag. The Mexican flag is a very important symbol to all Mexicans which is exemplified by the Dia de la Bandera; a day dedicated to celebrating the flag where each Mexican pledges allegiance to the flag and their country. Keep in mind that under Mexican law, the Flag is protected and special permits are needed to reproduce its image. Massachusetts Flag And The Flag Company Inc

By Ann Kent

One of the original 13 colonies and one of the six New England states, Massachusetts (officially called a commonwealth) is known for being the landing place of the Mayflower and the Pilgrims. English explorer and colonist John Smith named the state for the Massachuset tribe.

Boston, the state capital, was a hotbed of activity, including the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party, during the American Revolution. In addition to its revolutionary spirit, the state is known for sparking the American Industrial Revolution with the growth of textile mills in Lowell, and for its large Irish-American population.

The state flag of Massachusetts showcased this pine tree from 6 March 1915 until 1 November 1971, when the new look of the flag officially went into effect. Though the newer flag became effective in November, it had actually been approved earlier that year on 3 June 1971.

This State coat of arms features on either side of the Massachusetts Flag. The bright blue field that is emblazoned on the pristine white flag bears the figure of a Massachuset or a Native American, who is shown holding a bow in his right hand and an arrow in the left.

The state flag of Massachusetts has a solid white field with the Massachusetts coat of arms in the center. The coat of arms features an Algonquin man armed with a bow with an arrow pointed towards the ground. The man reflects the history of the native people of Massachusetts, and the arrow is pointed towards the ground as a symbol of peace.

A blue ribbon surrounds the sides and bottom of the shield, on which the Commonwealth's motto is written in gold lettering: "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem." The sword on the crest supports the motto on the ribbon, which translates into "By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty." This motto, which was written in 1659 by English politician Algernon Sydney, was adopted in 1775. Mauritania Flag And Its History

By Marina Koronsky

From the 3rd to 7th centuries, the migration of Berber tribes from North Africa displaced the Bafours, the original inhabitants of present-day Mauritania and the ancestors of the Soninke. Continued Arab-Berber migration drove indigenous black Africans south to the Senegal River or enslaved them. By 1076, Islamic warrior monks (Almoravid or Al Murabitun) completed the conquest of southern Mauritania, defeating the ancient Ghana empire. Over the next 500 years, Arabs overcame fierce Berber resistance to dominate Mauritania.

Just like other countries in Africa, the colors of the flag of Mauritania have the hints of Pan-African colors which represent the status of the country as an African nation. The Mauritanian flag has emerald green as the dominant color, with a five-pointed star and crescent, all in yellow colors, situated at its center. There are no available official records indicating the exact specification and proportion of the star and the crescent.

Mauritania became an independent nation on Nov. 28, 1960, and was admitted to the United Nations in 1961 over the strenuous opposition of Morocco, which claimed the territory. In the late 1960s, the government sought to make Arab culture dominant.

The star and crescent are the distinctive features of the Mauritanian flag. According to the Islamic faith, the five-pointed star and crescent symbolize awareness, sincerity and triumph. It also means spirituality and independence. Legend has it that in 339 BC, a radiant and shining moon was the primary reason why Philip of Macedon failed to conquer Byzantium.

The green and gold in the Mauritanian Islands' flag are considered Pan-African colors. Green also symbolizes Islam, and the gold also represents the sands of the Sahara desert. The crescent and star are also symbols of Islam, which is the major religion in Mauritania. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Mauritanian Flag for the future.

History Of Maryland Flag

By Hank Nikolson

Before Europeans arrived in Maryland the land was inhabited by Native Americans. Most of the Native Americans spoke the Algonquian language. They lived in domed wigwam homes made from tree branches, bark, and mud.

One of the original 13 colonies, Maryland lies at the center of the Eastern Seaboard, amid the great commercial and population complex that stretches from Maine to Virginia. Its small size belies the great diversity of its landscapes and ways of life that they foster, from the low-lying and water-oriented Eastern Shore and Chesapeake Bay area, through the metropolitan Baltimore, its largest city, to the forested Appalachian foothills and mountains of its western reaches.

The flag was adopted on Mar. 9, 1904. Maryland is the seventh state of the union, gaining statehood on Apr. 28, 1788. It is one of the original 13 colonies that united to form the union of the United States. A gold and black flag was used by the colony, until the American Revolutionary War. During the American Civil War, Maryland remained with the Union (North) however, many citizens sympathized with the Confederacy (south).

In 1638, Leonard Calvert, son of Sir George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore, wrote to his brother Cecilius that he had flown the Calvert banner in battle, and through the 17th and 18th centuries, the flag continued in use. The Calvert coat of arms consisted of six vertical stripes, alternately yellow and black, with a diagonal stripe (from the upper hoist to lower fly) of counterchanged coloursâ€"that is, black where the diagonal crossed a yellow stripe and vice versa.

The flag of Maryland is sectioned into four quarters. The top left and bottom right are the same and the top right and bottom left quarters are also the same as each other. The flag features the arms of two English families, the Calvert family, and the Crossland family. The black and gold arms represent the Calverts and the red and white arms represent the Crosslands.

The quarters with the white and red arms belong to the Crossland family and the other gold and black arms stand for the Calverts. The symbolism of Maryland Flag can be traced in the names of the Calverts, who were said to be the founders of Maryland in 1634 as one of the British colonies. The red and white arms belonged to the maternal family of George Calvert (the 1st Lord Baltimore) or the Crosslands. History Of Malta Flag

By Fred Nilsson

The history of Malta is a long and colorful one dating back to the dawn of civilization. The Maltese Islands went through a golden Neolithic period, the remains of which are the mysterious temples dedicated to the goddess of fertility. Later on, the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans and the Byzantines, all left their traces on the Islands. British rule in Malta lasted until 1964 when Malta became independent. The Maltese adapted the British system of administration, education, and legislation. Modern Malta became a Republic in 1974 and joined the European Union in May 2004.

Maltas flag came into use near the middle of the 20th century, but its colors drew on a much older tradition. They are a reflection of the country's ancient history and the honors that it has received, and they have formed the core of all of Maltas flags.

Tradition has it that the flag of Malta borrows its colors from Sicily's Count Roger whose banner was a chequered white and red flag. The flag's colors were also used by the Knights of Malta, who ruled the Island from 1530-1798. Their badge was the red flag with a characteristic whiteMaltese cross.

The upper left side of the flag of Malta displays the George Cross that has a red outline at the edges. The George Cross was added to the Maltese flag when it was presented to the Maltese people by Britain's King George VI to the Maltese in recognition of exceptional bravery during the Second World War (1942) when Malta was still part of the United Kingdom.

The cross was originally placed in a blue canton but in 1964, it was being placed within a red fimbriation. The flag was then officially adopted on that same year after Malta was granted by the British Empire a dominion status. The dominion status was still used until Malta became a Republic in 1971. Even after Malta became a Republic, the flag was still used.

Malta eventually became part of the British Empire, which represented it with a colonial flag. The flag had a blue field with the Union Jack in the canton and a red and white shield bearing the star of Malta in the fly. That flag fell out of use in favor of a design that included the George Cross on a blue square in the Canton. The blue section was removed in 1964 to create the modern design when the nation gained its independence from Britain. Marshall Islands Flag History Today

By Garry Tompson

The flag of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific was adopted at the time of self-governance in 1979. The star's 24 points represent the number of electoral districts while the four elongated points represent the principal cultural centers of Majuro, Jaluit, Wotje and Ebeye.

Most of the 60,422 inhabitants live on two atolls: Majuro, the capital of the Republic; and on Ebeye in Kwajalein, the largest atoll in the world, with a land area of six square miles surrounding a 655 square mile lagoon.

Sighted in 1529 by the Spanish navigator Álvaro Saavedra, the Marshalls lacked the wealth to encourage exploitation or mapping. The British captain Samuel Wallis chanced upon Rongerik and Rongelap atolls while sailing from Tahiti to Tinian. The British naval captains John Marshall and Thomas Gilbert partially explored the Marshalls in 1788, but much of the mapping was done by Russian expeditions under Adam Johann Krusenstern (1803) and Otto von Kotzebue (1815 and 1823).

The flag of the Marshall Islands was designed by Emlain Kabua in the 1970s. The blue background of the flag represents the Pacific Ocean, in which the Marshall Islands are scattered. The 24 pointed star represents the 24 municipalities of the Marshall Islands.

Indigenous people were educated in Japanese schools, studying Japanese language and Japanese culture. This policy was the government strategy not only in the Marshall Islands but on all the other mandated territories in Micronesia. Japan left the League of Nations in 1933, but continued to manage the islands in the region and in the late 1930s, even started the construction of air bases on some atolls, which also further served local residents. The Marshall Islands were an important geographical position, being the easternmost point in Japan's defensive ring at the beginning of World War II.

The expanding width of the stripes represents growth and vitality of the country. The star represents each of the 24 municipalities of the Marshall Islands. The four longer points represent the capital city of Majuro, and the administrative districts of Kwajalein, Wotji, and Jaluit. The longer points also form a cross and symbolize the Christian faith of the country. Mali Flag History Today

By Tom Rodgers

The recorded history of the area now called Mali begins with the empire of Ghana, which is said to date from the 4th century AD . At its height in the 10th century, it occupied eastern Senegal, southwest Mali, and southern Mauritania and carried on a steady trade across the Sahara with Arab states. The Ghana Empire disintegrated by the 13th century and was succeeded by the Mali Empire, from which the independent republic takes its name.

The current configuration of the flag was approved on March 1, 1961. The colors of Mali flag are associated with its vibrant history. They are interpreted as follows: the green stripe signifies hope, gold symbolizes purity and wealth and red indicates the force and the struggles of the heroes of independence.

The Mali flag was adopted on March 1, 1961. Mali gained independence from France on September 22, 1960. The first flag of Mali was adopted on April 4, 1959, when French Sudan and Senegal formed the Mali Federation. Senegal left in August 1960 and the flag was changed in 1961.

The black kanaga has been the crowning feature of the flag of Mali together with the tricolors until the kanaga was abandoned on March 1, 1961. It was believed that the black kanaga symbol included in the first flag was the idea of Leopold Senghor, who came to be the later Senegal president. Up until now, the Mali flag retained the tricolors of the Pan-African colors.

This symbol, known as the kanaga, originated with the Dogon people of Mali and was given modern meaning by the Negritude movement of West African and Caribbean intellectuals. In 1960, when Senegal and Mali split into separate countries, Muslim fundamentalists in Mali objected to the human figure as being contrary to the precepts of Islam.

A 'kanaga' symbol was used on the first Mali flag until it was abolished in 1961. The symbol is a black human-like image and it was removed because of pressure from Muslims who do not approve of making images in the human form. Malaysia Flag And The Flag Company Inc

By Albert Gregory

The first people to live in Malaya were Stone Age hunter-gatherers. They arrived as early as 8,000 BC. Later Stone Age farmers came to Malaya and displaced them. (The hunter-gatherers continued to exist but they retreated into remote areas). The farmers practiced slash and burn agriculture. They cleared an area of the rainforest by burning it then grew crops. After a few years, the land would be exhausted and the farmers would clear a new area. However within a few years, the old area would become covered in vegetation and would become fertile again.

Those living in the coastal regions had early contact with the Chinese and Indians; seafaring traders from India brought with them Hinduism, which was blended with the local animist beliefs. As Muslims conquered India, they spread the religion of Islam to Malaysia. In the 15th century, Islam acquired a firm hold on the region when the Hindu ruler of the powerful city-state of Malacca, Parameswara Dewa Shah, converted to Islam.

The flag design consists of a blue rectangle on the top left corner having a yellow crescent and a yellow star with fourteen points and a field of red and white stripes. The stripes have identical widths. The fourteen-pointed star signifies the unity of the 13 federal states and the federal government. The equal width in the red and white stripes symbolizes the equal status of the 13 federal states and the federal government. The golden crescent moon represents Islam because it is the national religion. The blue region means the harmony and unity of the Malaysian people. Yellow is considered the royal color associated with the Malay rulers.

In September 1963 the country united with Singapore and the north Borneo territories of Sabah (formerly North Borneo) and Sarawak to form the Federation of Malaysia. The original flag had 11 stripes and an 11 point star but three more were added to mark the inclusion of the new states. Even though Singapore departed the Federation in 1965, the flag is still used. The flag of Malaysia consists of 14 alternating horizontal stripes of red and white that run down the flag, starting with red at the top. In the top left quarter of the Malaysian flag, there is a blue square. Inside the square sits a yellow crescent and 14-pointed star.

On April 1, 1946, the Malayan Union was founded, followed on February 1, 1948, by the Federation of Malaya. A competition for a national flag led to the design first hoisted on May 26, 1950. It consisted of 11 horizontal stripes of red and white, the colors favored by the dominant United Malays National Organization and found in the flags of neighboring Indonesia and Thailand. The canton of the flag was blue with a yellow star of 11 points, symbolizing Malaya’s 11 states, and a yellow crescent. When additional states joined on September 16, 1963, the flag was modified.

The flag was further modified to respect the new federal states included in the federation in the form of three additional stripes and three additional points in the star. The current Malayan flag was hoisted on September 16, 1963, for the first time. The flag was derived from the flag of the Federation of Malaya. Maldives Flag History And The Flag Company Inc

By Eugine Seabass

The history of the Maldives is that of a small, isolated and peaceful nation constantly trying to contain the desires of its powerful neighbors and would-be colonizers. It's also an incredibly hazy history for the most part - of which little before the conversion to Islam in 1153 is known. Indeed, the pre-Muslim period is full of heroic myths, mixed with conjecture based on inconclusive archeological discoveries.

The islands are really the peaks of a huge underwater sierra standing at the bottom of the Indian Ocean and the Arabic Sea. The archipelago has a territory of approximately 90,000 square kilometers and the islands are very geographically spread. The capital of Maldives is the city of male and is found in the south of North Male Atoll. This is the seat of government and traditionally called the King’s island because the palace of the royal dynasties who first ruled it was built there.

The flag of Maldives has a distinct history of its own. Originally the country had a plain red flag to which black and white bands were added later on. These stripes were placed in the hoist. Prime Minister Amir Abdul Majid Didi added the green panel and the crescent to the flag in the early part of the present century. Till 1949, the crescent in the flag would point towards the flag's hoist. The Maldives Flag has a green colored background, which is surrounded by a bright red panel. The flag has a crescent in the center of the green area.

The Maldives flag was adopted on July 25, 1963. The flag of Maldives was originally a plain red flag. Up until 1949, the crescent pointed towards the left. The country gained independence from Britain on July 16, 1965. The flag of Maldives consists of a red background with a green rectangle in the middle of it. In the middle of the rectangle, there is a white crescent pointing towards the right side of the Maldives flag.

The national flag has its opening facing the hoist side while the state flag’s crescent faces the opposite direction. In 1953 to 1965, Maldives was made a republic and the flag has undergone another change. The national flag ceased to be used and the new flag featured a five-pointed white star beside the crescent moon.

The National flag of Maldives symbolizes certain aspects about the country. The green area represents the numerous palm trees that one can find over here. It is a symbol of life. The red area represents the blood of the people who sacrificed their lives for the country's independence while the crescent symbolizes Islam, the national religion of the country. Maine Flag And Its History

By Tom Nigel

The earliest human habitation in what is now Maine can be traced back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by the burial mounds of the Red Paint people found in the south-central part of the state. The Native Americans who came later left enormous shell heaps, variously estimated to be from 1,000 to 5,000 years old. At the time of settlement by Europeans, the Abnaki were scattered along the coast and in some inland areas.

The coast of Maine, which may have been visited by the Norsemen, was included in the grant that James I of England awarded to the Plymouth Company, and colonists set out under George Popham in 1607.

The original 1901 Maine flag was much simpler than the current one, consisting of just a pine tree against a yellow background with a blue North Star on the upper left-hand corner. However, designs for the current flag gained approval by the Maine legislature on February 23, 1909. Interestingly, there are no official colors of the state seal, just that the blue field on the flag must match the color of the U.S. flag. Therefore, this flag’s coat of arms may come in a variety of colors!

The blue color of the flag tallies with the blue shade used by the US flag. The heart of the flag bears an embroidery of the State coat of arms of Maine. The edge of the flag is decorated with a two and a half inches broad, yellow colored silk, knotted fringe. The images on the Maine State coat of arms are those of land, sea, a moose, and a pine tree. On one side of the shield is a farmer supporting himself on a scythe and the other side has a sailor resting on an anchor.

Maine's official state seal also displays the state's coat of arms. The farmer is a symbol of pride in Maine's agricultural roots. The sailor represents Maine's strong ties to the sea. Symbols of the natural richness of the state are pictured on the center shield - a pine tree, a moose (Maine's official state animal), sea, and sky.

The star glimmering overhead is a symbol of unity and leadership, which guides citizens home. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Maine State Flag for the future.

The Flag Company Inc And Madagascar Flag

By Steven Hong

As a very large island in the Indian Ocean (1000 miles from north to south, and in the land area more than twice the size of Great Britain), Madagascar is a natural landfall for seafarers sailing east from Africa or west from Indonesia.

The Malagasy are of mixed Malayo-Indonesian and African-Arab ancestry. Indonesians are believed to have migrated to the island about 700. The French made the island a protectorate in 1885, and then, in 1894-1895, ended the monarchy, exiling Queen Rànavàlona III to Algiers.

In 1883, the French bombarded and occupied Toamsina (then Tamatave), and in 1885, they established a protectorate over Madagascar, which was recognized by Great Britain in 1890. Rainilaiarivony organized resistance to the French, and there was heavy fighting from 1894 to 1896. In 1896, French troops under J. S. Gallieni defeated the Merina and abolished the monarchy.

A popular meaning attributed to the flag of the small Madagascar Island in the Indian Ocean is that its colors tell the country’s captivating story. Adopted two years before declaring independence to France (1958), the flag of Madagascar tells the story of the traditional society and the existent classes in the past: white and red are symbols of the Merina Kingdom that existed in Madagascar for a long period of time, while green represented the Hova peasant class that was very important during the revolutionary independence movement.

There is also another widely accepted theory which suggests that the colors signify the Southeast Asian origins of the Malagasy people who came to Madagascar centuries before. As you can see, the red color is also a dominant color of the Indonesian flag. Further, the color green represented Hova, the famous commoners of Madagascar, who led various independence uprisings and the revolution against France which caused the overthrow of the French regime. Under contemporary Madagascar, the colors took on different interpretations. They now believe that the red color symbolizes sovereignty, green for hope and white for purity.

They also represent the ethnic origins of the Malagasy people in Southeast Asia and are shared by the flag of Indonesia. Green was the color of the Hova, a class of commoners who played a significant role in the independence movement. The modern day interpretation of the Madagascar flag colors believes that red standing for sovereignty, white represents purity and green means hope. Macedonia Flag History

By Denis Barns

Macedonia is a landlocked state in the heart of the Balkans and is slightly smaller than the state of Vermont. It is a mountainous country with small basins of agricultural land. The Vardar is the largest and most important river.

The current and official flag of the Republic of Macedonia is said to be first adopted last October 5, 1995. Since the Macedonian state has gold and red for its national and characteristic colors, these colors can also be seen in its national flag. Its flag is represented by a golden sun which is placed on a red surface. The sun has eight rays and the rays appear to extend up to the red field center. The sun which is embossed in the flag of Macedonia is referred to as the Vergina Sun.

The flag of Macedonia was designed by Miroslav Grcev, who also proposed a new national coat of arms. The flag was adopted on October 5, 1995, replacing the first flag of the independent Republic of Macedonia, which also featured a yellow sun on a red field. The first flag of independent Macedonia was adopted on August 11, 1992, replacing the Communist flag of Macedonia.

This new flag kept the red and yellow and incorporated the Vergina Sun, a symbol that had been regarded as a symbol of Greek-Macedonian connections. However, Greece protested the use of this symbol because of strained relations between the countries after Macedonia gained independence. The current flag design was derived from that flag, morphing the Vergina Sun into the stylized sun seen on the flag of Macedonia today.

After several years, the Vergina Sun was rediscovered and it was found on the larnax of Alexander the Great’s mother. Since then, the Vergina Sun has been made as one of the political symbols of modern Macedonia.

The flag of Macedonia consists of a centered yellow sun, with eight extending rays, which widen atop a red background. The sun design is a simplified version of the Star of Vergina, which appeared on Macedonia's former national flag. Red has been a significant color throughout the history of Macedonian flags. The sun also represents "the new sun of liberty", which is mentioned in the country's national anthem. Luxembourg Flag History Today

By Sindy Kelling

Luxembourg is one of the world's smallest sovereign states at 999 square miles (2,586 square kilometers). The triangle-shaped country borders Germany to the east, France to the south, and Belgium to the west.

Although the flag of Luxembourg had been used in the year 1848, it was officially adopted in 1972. The colors of the flag are white, red, and blue. The colors of the flag are said to be derived from the counts, dukes, and grand dukes of Luxembourg.

The colors were branded during the Belgian Revolution in 1830, and the flag was officially designed in 1845, ten years after Luxembourg finally declared its independence from Germany. Inspired by the flag in France, the colors of the flag in Luxembourg are based on the coat of arms of its Grand Duke, Count Henry, during the 13th century. It has a red lion with white and blue stripes in the background. Such a coat of arms may be dated back to the medieval times.

The Luxembourg flag was adopted on June 23, 1972. The Luxembourg flag was influenced by the French flag. Luxembourg declared independence from Germany in 1835 and designed a horizontal flag in 1845.

Even though the flag, with its three colors and horizontal design, was fixed last June 12, 1845, it was not until the 23rd of June, 1972, that the flag was officially adopted. Until today, this flag has been in existence and it has been used as a symbol of independence in Luxembourg.

The flag of Luxembourg is divided horizontally into three equal horizontal bands of red, white, and blue from top to bottom. This tricolor flag is very similar to the flag of the Netherlands, though its proportions are different and the shade of blue is lighter and brighter on the flag of Luxembourg. The ensign of Luxembourg, used for ships, has ten narrow blue and white stripes, with a red lion over the center. Louisiana Flag And Its History

By Gregory Slope

Louisiana sits above the Gulf of Mexico at the mouth of the Mississippi River, bordered by Arkansas to the north, Mississippi to the east and Texas to the west. Originally colonized by the French during the 18th century, it became U.S. territory as part of the historic Louisiana Purchase in 1803, and was admitted to the union in 1812.

Earlier, in 1803, Louisiana had become a part of the United States because of the region's importance to the trade and security of the American mid-west. New Orleans and the surrounding territory controlled the mouth of the Mississippi River down which much of the produce of the mid-west traveled to reach a market. To get the vital region in American hands, President Thomas Jefferson negotiated the Louisiana Purchase with Napoleon.

With the acquisition of Louisiana, Jefferson nearly doubled the size of the fledgling U.S. and made it a world power. Later, 13 states or parts of states were carved out of the Louisiana Purchase territory.

The basic design of the Louisiana flag originated in July 1912. The current flag dates from 1996. Louisiana is the 18th state of the union, gaining statehood on Apr. 30, 1812. The state seal was adopted in 1902.

The blue color of the field is one that stands for truth. The eastern brown pelican depicted in white and gold is the state bird. It stands as a Louisianian symbol of self-sacrifice from the 1800's. The initial settlers learned that pelicans were kind and good parenting birds. It was believed that pelicans would tear their own flesh and feed the blood to their little ones in times of food scarcity.

Today, the Louisiana Flag portrays the same image of the pelican tearing at its breast. So this pelican stands for the state, that goes to any extent to protect its land and people. Liechtenstein Flag And The Flag Company Inc

By Ben Gates

Tiny Liechtenstein, not quite as large as Washington, DC, lies on the east bank of the Rhine River, south of Lake Constance, between Austria and Switzerland.

A modern constitution was drawn up back in 1921, but even today the prince retains the power to dissolve parliament and must approve every act before it becomes law. Prince Franz Josef II was the first ruler to live in the castle above the capital city of Vaduz. He died in 1989 and was succeeded by his son, Prince Hans-Adam II.

Traditionally, flags of territories ruled by royalty in Europe have corresponded to the “livery colors” of the ruler’s coat of arms. The flag of Liechtenstein is an example, however, where the livery colors and the arms are quite different.

When Liechtenstein participated in the 1936 Summer Olympic Games held in Germany, it discovered that the national flag of Haiti had the same blue-red pattern. To avoid confusion in the future, the following year a yellow crown was added near the hoist of the blue stripe in the Liechtenstein flag.

Blue and red are the country's national colors. The gold crown, outlined in black, is the symbol of Princely authority and symbolizes the bond between Liechtenstein's prince, the state, and the people."

In addition to the usual horizontal flying flag, there is a square banner and a long, narrow flag that hangs vertically from a crossbar. The crossbar is attached by a cord to a normal pole extended from a building, but the crown points upward regardless of the vertical or horizontal format. Lithuania Flag History And The Flag Company Inc

By Bob Next

Lithuania is situated on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea and borders Latvia on the north, Belarus on the east and south, and Poland and the Kaliningrad region of Russia on the southwest. It is a country of gently rolling hills, many forests, rivers and streams, and lakes. The ancestors of modern Lithuanians were a people called the Balts who arrived in the area about 2,000 BC. In 1240 AD, a man named Mindaugas united the Lithuanian tribes.

The Liths, or Lithuanians, united in the 12th century under the rule of Mindaugas, who became king in 1251. Through marriage, one of the later Lithuanian rulers became the king of Poland (Ladislaus II) in 1386, uniting the countries. In 1410, the Poles and Lithuanians defeated the powerful Teutonic Knights at Tannenberg.

It is believed that the Lithuanian flag colors had its roots from the country’s national dress but others would like to believe that the yellow stripes represent the sun, green for the fields, and red for the blood that was shed in gaining their independence.

In the early days, Lithuania itself did not have a national flag of its own â€" what they had was only a state flag. But during the end of the 19th century, Lithuania fought for freedom. However, this freedom involved giving them the right to have a government of their own without breaking any alliance with Russia.

Prior to this flag was a White Knight on a horse which had been used for centuries. When the USSR took control in 1944 it outlawed the flag. In 1989, Lithuania regained independence from the USSR.

Lithuanian's flag colors are based on the country's traditional national dress - the yellow stripe represents the sun, Lithuania's fields of wheat and prosperity; the green symbolizes the country's forests, flora, and hope; and the red stands for the blood spilt for independence, courage and the people's love for Lithuania. History Of Liberia Flag

By Barbara Garrow

Lying on the Atlantic in the southern part of West Africa, Liberia is bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Côte d'Ivoire. It is comparable in size to Tennessee. Africa's first republic, Liberia was founded in 1822 as a result of the efforts of the American Colonization Society to settle freed American slaves in West Africa.

Liberia is the only black state in Africa never subjected to the colonial rule and is Africa’s oldest republic. It was established on land acquired for freed U.S. slaves by the American Colonization Society, which founded a colony at Cape Mesurado in 1821. In 1824, the territory was named Liberia, and its main settlement was named Monrovia, which is the present-day capital. Liberian independence was proclaimed in 1847, and its boundaries were expanded. The country enjoyed relative stability until a rebellion in 1989 escalated into a destructive civil war in the 1990s that did not fully cease until 2003. The country’s first post-conflict elections, held in 2005, were noteworthy for the election of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to the presidency, as she was the first woman to be elected head of state in Africa.

The Liberian banner was received on July 26, 1847. Liberia was settled by liberated American slaves in the mid-1800s, naming their nation for freedom itself. The nation was initially perceived as a province of the USA. Thus, the Liberian banner is fundamentally the same to the banner of the United States of America.

The flag of Liberia consists of six red and five white alternating horizontal stripes that run down the flag. In the top left-hand corner of the Liberian flag, there is a blue square which has a white five-pointed star in the center of it.

The 11 stripes symbolize the 11 signatories of the Liberian affirmation of independence. The red and white hues symbolize boldness and good magnificence. The white star speaks of the opportunity the ex-slaves were given and the blue square speaks of the African terrain.

The Liberian banner is seen on numerous boats the world over, as Liberia offers enlistment under its banner. Shipping organizations do this to keep away from expenses and confinements that different nations authorize. It is assessed that around 1600 boats fly the Liberian banner as a banner of comfort. This acquires a great part of the nation's income. Libya Flag And Its History

By James Pipkins

At first, Libya was inhabited by Berber tribes. After 1,000 BC a people from Lebanon called the Phoenicians settled in Tripolitania (western Libya). They founded Tripoli. Later the ancient Greeks settled in Cyrenaica (eastern Libya). Later both areas of Libya became part of the Roman Empire. A Roman Emperor called Septimus Severus (193-211) was a native of the great city of Leptis Magna in Roman Libya. Unfortunately, Leptis Magna was severely damaged by an earthquake in 365.

The first inhabitants of Libya were Berber tribes. In the 7th century B.C., Phoenicians colonized the eastern section of Libya, called Cyrenaica, and Greeks colonized the western portion, called Tripolitania. Tripolitania was for a time under Carthaginian control. It became part of the Roman Empire from 46 B.C. to A.D.

During World War II Libya was a major battleground for the combined forces of Germany and Italy fighting the Allied powers. After the war, Libya became the first country to gain independence through the United Nations. The independent kingdom of Libya was created in December 1951.

When Libya gained independence in 1951, the Kingdom of Libya was established. That was then the current flag of Libya was first adopted. After the coup of 1969, the Libyan Arab Republic was established, when the flag was changed under the directions of Muammar al-Gaddafi. He was overthrown in the 2011 civil war, which featured the rebels using, and later re-establishing the same flag.

The banner of Libya is a tricolor, with three even groups of red, dark and green hues individually, shaping the base. The dark band is the biggest in width. On the inside is a symbol involved a white sickle and a five-pointed star.

The outline framing the focal bit the bow and star on a dark foundation have its roots in the configuration of the pennant used amid the Senussi Dynasty, which was established in Mecca in 1837. The red shading speaks of the blood of the Libyan individuals who lost their lives in the rightist principle of Italy, and the green shading remains for peace. History Of Laos Flag

By Tom Frank

Laos is a country located in Southeast Asia and is officially named as Lao People's Democratic Republic. The history of the Laos flag can be traced back to 1953 when the royal government and the Pathet Lao struggled for political power and the Pathet Lao succeeded by being an alliance of the royal government before taking over the rule.

During this time, the Pathet Lao used the flag design of blue with red stripes at the top and at the bottom and a white disk in the center. This became the national flag of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party wherein the red stripes signified blood shed by the people for their drive to achieve freedom and the color blue representing prosperity and wealth for the people.

In the 17th century, under the region of King Souliyavongsa, the Kingdom entered its 'golden age' and gained increasing attention from Europe. Reports written by Dutch merchants from the East Indian Company describe a land of magnificent palaces, temples, and awe-inspiring religious ceremonies. Vientiane was then considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Southeast Asia.

The current Lao flag became official at the same time the republic was created (1975). The white circle is said to represent the sunrise over the Mekong River. It is also sometimes described as the unity after the struggle from imperialism. This flag is also one of the few that represents a communist country without having the typical communist symbolic stars or hammer and sickle.

The flag of Laos consists of three horizontal stripes with a white circle in the middle. The top and bottom stripes are equal width and are red; while the middle stripe is blue and equal to the width of the two red stripes.

The umbrella is a Buddhist tradition and the pedestal means the laws on which the nation is founded. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Laos Flag for the future.

Lesotho Flag And The Flag Company Inc

By Pall Frank

Lesotho was settled by the Sotho people sometime in the 16th century, mingling peacefully with the earlier Khoisan whose history can be traced in rock-art in various sites in the mountains. The Basotho were welded into a nation relatively recently by one outstanding leader. Around 1820, Moshoeshoe I, a minor chief of the Bakwena, gathered a following among the tribes who had retreated to the north-western borders of present-day Lesotho to protect themselves against Zulu and Matabele raids.

Despite his limited military power, Moshoeshoe's diplomatic skills allowed the kingdom he created to long outlive those of his much stronger rivals. After successful resistance from his stronghold at Thaba Bosiu near Maseru in 1824, Moshoeshoe became chief of the local Basotho and other tribal groups, his following then numbering some 40,000. He was also successful at establishing good relationships with missionaries, especially French Catholics, whom he encouraged to establish missions and schools, and to advise him on negotiations with Europeans.

The Lesotho flag was adopted on January 19, 1987, after a military coup, replacing the flag that was adopted when Lesotho gained independence from Britain on October 4, 1966. The country also changed its name from Basutoland on this date.

The Lesotho banner was received on January 19, 1987, after a military upset, supplanting the banner that was embraced when Lesotho got freedom from Britain on October 4, 1966. The nation additionally changed its name from Basutoland on this date.

The new Lesotho flag retained elements of the original Lesotho flag. It maintained the symbolic use of the national motto from the country's coat of arms: "Khotso-Pula-Nala", which means "Peace-Rain-Plenty". The upper white section of the Lesotho flag represents peace, the blue stripe symbolizes rain and water, and the green section stands for the country's fertile agricultural land. The shield, supported by a spear on the left, a bludgeon on the right and a plumed spine in the center, symbolizes Lesotho's willingness to defend its independence.

The Lesotho flag combines elegance and rich symbolism, as explained above. The background of the flag is a combination of three horizontal colored stripes: Blue, White, and Green - in that order, from top to bottom. In the center of the white stripe is shown a black mokorotlo, which is a type of Basotho hat. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Lesotho Flag for the future.
