The Flag Company Inc And Papua New Guinea Flag

By Voter Samson

Papua New Guinea occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, just north of Australia, and many outlying islands. The first inhabitants of the island New Guinea were Papuan, Melanesian, and Negrito tribes, who altogether spoke more than 700 distinct languages.

The eastern half of New Guinea was first explored by Spanish and Portuguese explorers in the 16th century. In 1828, the Dutch formally took possession of the western half of the island.

Adopted on the first of July 1971, the flag of Papua New Guinea was designed by a 15 years old school girl that won the flag design competition. Even if the designer was so young, the actual flag has strong significance and connection to the stateĆ¢€™s history.

Red and black are the colors that represented for many years the Papua New Guinea tribes, and combined with white and yellow, these colors also indicate the symbols of the country (Germany) that put the basis to the first colonies established in this region.

Black, red and yellow is traditional colors which are found in Papua New Guinean art and clothing. The yellow bird, a stylized bird of paradise, is culturally significant to Papua New Guineans and in full flight, it represents freedom and the country's birth as an independent nation. The five stars symbolize the constellation the Southern Cross, representing the stars Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon, which is smaller because it doesn't shine as brightly as the other stars. The Southern Cross represents the country's geographical position in the world and its link to Australia, which also incorporates the Southern Cross on its flag.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Papua New Guinea flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Papua New Guinean flag for the future.
