A Useful Guide On Protecting Against Elephant Poachers

By Brenda Brown

The threat of elephants by poachers is real. Annually more than twenty thousand elephants are massacred for ivory on the African continent. These figures are alarming and if no measures are not taken to support effort on protecting against elephant poachers, the animals will soon be extinct. This guide seeks to highlight practical measures that are needed to curb this menace.

The main reason why this trade still persists is that there are still nations that allow the trade of ivory. The sure way of eliminating this menace is by doing away with the ivory trade. If the nations that support this trade ban this commodity, then the market for these animal trophies will simply crash.

Ivory products are used by individuals in the homes or religious places. If these people are sensitized to the dangers of harvesting ivory, then they would look for alternative materials to make their ornaments and antiques. The best way people can support the conservation efforts of elephants is by making deliberate efforts not to buy ivory. The net effect is the loss of market for elephant tusks thereby eliminating the motivation to poach these animals.

It is therefore incumbent on everyone who understands the danger of wildlife poaching to spread the world and help save elephants. What most people do not understand is that an elephant is most beneficial when it is alive than when it is dead. This is because its long life allows it to become a source of a tourist attraction for many years, therefore, earning a country lots of foreign exchange.

It is also important to understand that the people who do the actual killing of the animals are usually not the masterminds of poaching activities. This is because the poachers are contracted to kill the animals by wealthy individuals. They provide weapons and logistical support. Therefore, if governments want to eliminate this practice, the need to use intelligence to track the real masterminds and bring them to book. Stringent laws need to be enacted so that these individuals get extremely punitive sentences if found guilty of poaching activities.

Embracing technology can make it easy for game wardens to patrol and offer sufficient security to wildlife. For example, drones can provide surveillance for big sanctuaries and game reserves. These devices require fewer people to operate and can detect intrusions to the parks faster than ground personnel. They also reduce operating costs of protecting wildlife.

These wardens should be trained on combat skills and provided with proper tools such vehicles, clothing, communication equipment and weapons. This because the poachers often are better equipped than the rangers. They have more lethal weapons and are even well trained than the warden. With the right training, wardens can face poachers with confidence and drive them away.

These operations require money. Here is where individuals and corporations come in by contributing towards elephant conservation. This can be achieved through donations to organizations that run rescue sanctuaries for elephants. The net effect is that these organizations will be well-funded to meet their objectives.
